Germany, here we come!

Welcome to my new blog! I thought I'd try this as a way to share some fun highlights & photos of my upcoming biking & hiking trip to Germany. I'm down to the final preparations as we leave on Saturday, September 3 for this trip that's been nearly three years in the making.

I'm thrilled to be spending 12 days in the beautiful homeland of my ancestors. With the help of the folks at BikeToursDirect, we'll spend the first five days biking Germany's renowned wine country along the meandering Moselle River from Trier (Germany's oldest city) to Koblenz, where the Moselle and Rhine rivers converge. Probably have to do a little wine sampling along the way! And don't forget the castles - lots of them! The weekend plans include a visit to the home of my German relatives in Wahlbach, including a stop at the birthplace of my great grandfather Bast in Horn. Saturday evening will feature a major wine festival on the Rhine River, complete with fireworks, thus the name "Rhine in Flames." Should be wonderful! On Sunday we head south to Bavaria and the Alps for some hiking in Berchtesgaden National Park, on the border with Austria (think Sound of Music). Better practice up on my yodeling. We'll finally end up in Munich, and will have to make a "must do" stop at the Hofbrauhaus biergarten to cap off the trip. It's only right! My travel companions include my nephew Jeff and his girlfriend Leigh, past bike trip companion Pat and her husband Ken, and girlfriends Kathleen and Amie. A great group!

Would love to have you follow along, and I look forward to reading your comments.
